  No encryption system is foolproof especially when at the end of the day the decision to deactivate a smartcard relies on a human entering data into a piece of software which then communicates via satellite with the smartcard.
  It is not a stretch to assume that a few people after cancelling still get the service and of course NTL has been hacked for a long time giving access to all SKY channels.

  It never ceases to amaze me at the confusion as to just what people claim and think they have. I keep asking people if they have Sky, and they say yes..but on digging, they mean they get one channel on Freeview. Others have Freesat in its various forms..they, too, think they have everything.

  If Sky genuinely do send a signal out to a digi-box when channels are added/removed, it might be possible to subscribe to everything, then unsubscribe, and block that unsubscribe command from arriving. You'd need to know what the unsubscribe command looked like, and be able to filter it out, though, and that's not trivial. I assume they send 'This is what you can view' commands out every now and then, just to catch out anyone that calls, cancels, then unplugs their digibox for the next 6 hours or so.
  Also, chances are that if someone did this, Sky would simply update all the software on the digiboxes to recognise a different channel remove instruction, and also ensure that unupdated boxes couldn't receive anything any more, and you're back to trying to figure out what the unsubscribe command looks like.

  If you unsubscribe from sky while your card is in your dragon cam then it will miss the deactiviation signal and carry on working. However, it will also miss the 'keep alive' signal that it requires every 6-8 weeks to update the 'tiers' (channel authorisation), so it will eventually stop working, even on the FTV channels. The only way to reactivate it is to put it in a sky digibox overnight, but you'll only get the FTV channels back.
  So basically it's not worth it.. unless you're planning on ditching sky anyway and happen to have a non-sky box and dragon cam lying around.

  Although Videoguard doesn't work like that.
  You have several systems in use, if you cancel they can kill the card straight away (or if they discover you have broken the contract terms). If you find some way of stopping a kill signal getting through the card will no longer be receiving a 'keep alive' message (as noted by _Stu_) which tells the card to keep working. After some time the card will cease to function.

  Basically, Sky make £Millions every day. They pay a group of very well paid people to make sure that Joe Bloggs doesn't get anything for free. So whatever scam people think of - you can guarantee that these high paid, full time, professional bods have already thought about it and put measures in place to prevent it happening.
  Of course there is always the 12 volt battery 'hack' which many people drone on about. You get all the PPV movies for free, until your card runs out of credit, and then you re-connect to the phne line and have to pay it all on your next bill!
  If you really want to get channels for free, why not get a proper sat receiver, dragon cam etc and see whats on offer from the continent.

  Is it not that Nokia Dbox2 thing? I know they receive all the cable channels free, but they sell satellite versions too, although I always thought that they only picked up the free satellite channels.
  Who knows. Anyway I was thinking of getting a cable Dbox2, then I thought - why bother? I'm only £15.50 for the top package, I'd never watch the movie channels as my flatmate gets DVD rentals delivered, I'm not into sports. As far as I'm concerned there is no porn on British TV.
  So in the end I decided it's just not worth the cost.
